From GH₵500 to a Full House: The Tampoori Origin Story
If you had walked into our home back in 2020, you wouldn’t have found a high-end textile studio. You would have found a lot of steam, a lot of laughter, and a very determined mother-daughter trio navigating a mountain of fabric.
Tampoori didn’t start with a giant business loan or a 50-page corporate strategy. It started with GH₵500 and a return to roots.
The Team Behind the Dye
It all began with Aba. After retiring as a matron, she didn't want a quiet life. She wanted a colourful one. She went back to her lifelong love: the art of hand-dyeing. She is the heart of our artistry, the one who reminds us that you can’t rush a good thing.
Then there’s Efuwa, who saw the magic in Aba’s work and thought: The world needs to see this. She stepped in to organize the chaos, document the prints, and build the structure that turned a hobby into a brand. And keeping us all moving? That’s Adwo. She’s the engine room, running the day-to-day operations and making sure the studio runs like clockwork.
The Slow Revolution
In a world of "buy it fast, toss it faster," we decided to do the opposite. We looked at the beautiful tradition of Ghanaian cloth and realized that the dignity of the process was being lost to mass production and cheap copies.
So, we went small. We went slow. We started hunting for Obroni Wawu (secondhand offcuts) and rescuing misprints from local mills. We realized that with a bit of joy and a lot of hand-dyeing, we could turn discarded into designer.
Nine Kids and Six Women Later...
What started as a passion project has blossomed into a close-knit team of six incredible women. Between the six of us, we are raising nine children. Our studio isn't just a place of work; it’s a community. When you buy a piece of Tampoori fabric, you aren't just buying cloth, you’re supporting an ecosystem of women who handle everything from the first batik wax-resist to the final packaging.
The Journey Continues
From that first GH₵500, we’ve grown to serve over a thousand customers, collaborate with luxury fashion houses, and set up shop at fairs all over Ghana. We’ve stayed intentional, stayed original and small-batch, and most importantly, stayed inspired by joy.
Whether it’s a table runner for your Sunday brunch or a shirt meant to be passed down to your sons, we make it with the same love we had back in that first year.
Thanks for being part of our story. We’re just getting started!
